Fashion News: Naomi Sims, 1st Black Supermodel dies at age 61

Successful Model and Entrepreneur Naomi Sims passed away – sources say she died of cancer.

Ms. Sims, was the first AfricanAmerican model to cover Ladies Home Journal in 1968 – this was said to be a pinnacle moment in the ‘Black is Beautiful’ campaign of the late 1960’s. Ms. Sims was known to break down racial barriers when it came to modeling and business with her angular heart-shaped face and long limbs.

She was known for saying, “It’s a sad thing when a model ends up broke. . .” So, Naomi left modeling in the ’70’s to work in the beauty industry. She went on to create a multi-million dollar wig franchise which continues to be successful today. Ms. Sims also wrote several books on modeling and health all targeted to African-American Women.

Naomi Sims was 61 when she died. She will be truly missed.
