I’m excited to share this very special playlist with you! The Jack and Ahlia Playlist is the music I listened to which inspired each of the four main characters: Jack, Ahlia, Corey, and Jordan. You can listen to this playlist on Spotify and Tidal. It features amazing tracks from some of my favorite popular and indie artists including: SZA, Al Green, Method Man, Carl Thomas, Jeezy, Romen, and Daniel Ceasar.
When I quit my job, in the spring, I had a lot more time to be creative. So, I was cruising the online streets, I came across a writing challenge, #XD30 created by Blogger and Online Influence, Xavier D’Leau. XD hosts a writing challenge that’s as simple as it is difficult. Basically, you write everyday for 30 days. The simple part was to write WHATEVER you’d like: poem, sonnet, haiku, or short story. The difficult part was writing everyday – LAWD! But, I started the challenge and realized I missed writing fiction. That’s how the story of Jack and Ahlia was born.
I started with what I thought would be a short story, but it’s become an actual . . . novel. After 30 days, I was due to have a great work of fiction that explores the complicated relationship of Jack and Ahlia, Jack and Ahlia are best friends, sometimes lovers, business partners, and a complicated pair who may just destroy each other due to their fear and secrets.
Now, it’s a completed and available for purchase on Amazon. You can read a sample on my Tumblr account, but I guarantee you’ll want to purchase.
This motivation post should have went out on Monday, but it’s Tuesday and y’all will deal. Plus, y’all love me right? Right! I just wanted to tell you, “Thank You”, for being patient with me while I took a blogging break. Now on to today’s MOTIVATION.
Y’all, I took a break because my life totally changed in less than 48hrs! My new normal is waking up at 4:45am every weekday, turning in reports without error, and being a shining example of adulthood to a teenager. For an ultra chill person like myself, I don’t do well with rigidity. Let me tell you how I’ve spent so many years praying for God to magically fix the weak parts of my life, not knowing THIS situation is what he’d use to do it. Don’t ask for what you aren’t willing to work for. This is what I’m learning.
I won’t be before you long.
There’s ALOT going on in my world right now! A lot. And truthfully, most of it isn’t good.
I like to keep it real with you guys because y’all are like my extended family – I need a break from posting. I can’t keep posting cute pics when my world feels like it’s crumbling. So, I’m giving myself two weeks off. I hate to do it because i know how quickly social media works. Y’all know I have extreme #FOMO, but if i don’t slow down I may be out of the game for good. Now, we can’t have THAT! Stay stylish! I’ll be back in December.
If you haven’t guessed by my lack of social media presence, return to regular posting schedule (Mon, Wed, Fri, & sometimes the weekend), and nonexistent Youtube updates, I’ve returned to the corporate world. Yes, girl! I took a new job in October (more on that next week). However, back in March, I quit my ‘good government’ job after 10 years. I then took the summer off to create, explore, and build the world of FabGlance. It was mostly fun to be a professional blogger. I kept up the facade that things were POPPIN’ over here. But, I quickly, realized, “Whoa, this is harder than I thought.” and I had to go back to work.
I went back to the 9-to-5 grind, realizing that I had FAILED at quitting. Basically, I was the goal that others strive for: Quit your corporate job and work for yourself. I knew it would be hard to quit my job and go off on my own (No Al B. Sure), but it was much harder than I ever expected. Yeah, I accomplished some of the goals that were sitting on the back-burner for YEARS. However, I was not as EXCEPTIONAL as I SHOULD have been.
When I took my hiatus from the corporate world, it gave me more time to explore the world of Fabglance. When I started this blog, I wanted to do more than write about fashion. I wanted to teach people how to be more fashionable. It took a little while to get started, but over the years I’ve styled models, local celebs, and working women. I just want women to feel amazing.
This summer, I was hired to style a new client, Jasmine. She turned 40 and wanted to WOW her friends and family. She trusted Fabglance to do the job. But I knew I had to do more than a quick mall run. I bought in Dewayne Richards, aka Dr. Beauty, for hair and makeup. Listen, the man is genius and can SLAY some hair and makeup. Then, I called Patrick Webster, one of my favorite photographers. Together, we gave Jasmine an amazing birthday photo shoot.
Oh yeah, can’t forget using local boutiques to style our FAB FORTY year old. The sequin dress came from Limonada Couture and her business professional look came from Runway Boutique. My goal is to use as many local retailers and entrepreneurs as possible. I am proud to say that this entire job was Nashville based.
Needless to say, the shoot went well. Jasmine was so pleased with her looks and the experience. I was pleased that my client was happy. Styled by Fabglance hit it out the park!
Do you wanna get Styled by Fabglance? In 2018, I’ll offer Complete Style Packages on my sales page. Right now, I’m doing my Closet Reorganization services. Click here to book a style session today.
I’m loving using my new YouTube channel to share different sides of myself. Also, I’d like to thank you for your comments on my videos. Today’s video is my new CHAT feature. Sometimes, I just want to talk to you, and using the written word is not enough. Let me know if you like it.
Today’s topic is relationships! Specifically, people attempting to get out of their their relationship … specifically your boyfriend being all up in my DMs and your mom’s DMs, and my friend’s DMs! I’m just tired of guys trying to create side situations with nice single girls. So, let’s talk about it!
So many times, people ask me, “Are you dating?” and the answer is YES, but with some frustration. I know there are great guys out there, but the corny guys are making it REAL bad for y’all. Seriously, I’m not here to be a side-chick. I want a fun, healthy, and amazing relationship with a great guy who doesn’t sneak away, sending janky texts to other women. And, you should want that too. You don’t need a guy treating you like you’re LESS THAN! Girl, you are the full package!
Take a look at my video and tell me what you think? Have you been cheated on? How did it feel? Have you cheated? Let’s talk about!
Last month, the team at FORM Beauty selected me to become a product ambassador. I was so excited to try these products because I’ve only heard amazing reviews. At the same time, I was hesitant because the Form Beauty system is kinda expensive – and that’s been the biggest complaint. However, the following review will help you understand why Form Beauty is a good deal. Yes, it’s a great deal! Let go!
When I was asked to be an ambassador, the first thing the team wanted me to do was take a survey to assess which Form products would work best with my hair type AND my hair routine. Many of you know I run the natural hair blog, Natural in Nashville (currently on hiatus), so I’m used to trying products that make big promises with no return. I love my natural hair but I hate that it gets SO dry, tangles easily, and shrinks as soon as I hit a piece of humidity. For those concerns, I tend to keep my hair in braids and protective crochet styles.
After I took the 10 minute survey, I was presented with a list of Form Beauty products specialized for my hair type and situation. Even though I love my cute curls, I’m a braid girl all day. Give me some bundles or some crochet and I’m ready! The key to being someone who wears weave and braids often is to make sure your hair is healthy UNDERNEATH your installation. If you get scared to take out your weave because your hair looks like ‘who did it and what for’ then you are doing natural hair ALL WRONG.
My first package from the Form Beauty team included the TWIST Styling Cream ($29) and the Multitask Leave-In Lotion ($32). I was immediately attracted to the Leave-In lotion. It’s a lotion in a specialized spray bottle. The product comes out in a fine mist so it distributes amazingly well. When I used it on my hair I was instantly in love. The smell of the Form Beauty products is amazing. The found the perfect balance … not floral but not heavy. If your guy has longer hair, he could use it too and not smell like a florist shop.
The next week I was ready to take the plunge. I washed, conditioned and then I blow dried my hair. I used the Twist Styling Creme to do a two-strand twist. Y’all! It came out so bomb! But the real test is if I could get SECOND DAY hair!
Second Day Hair! Yup! It passed the second day hair test! My hair was super moisturized, not greasy, kept its shape and felt so soft. I used a couple pumps of the leave in, to separate yesterday’s coils and wah-la! My hair was ready to rock. I’m totally in love with this styling system and I can’t wait to try the cleansers and conditioners.
So, are the Form Beauty products worth the cost? Albeit, they are expensive, it’s a QUALITY product. Also, my hair is about shoulder length now, but it’s thick. So, I didn’t have to use as much product to get the best results. Also, they have a subscription service and the product is available in Sephora. So, you don’t have to worry about running out in the middle of wash day. Oh yeah, and it’s a BLACK OWNED company! Yes! That’s the most exciting part. A black owned company working hard to help women with textured hair! I’m excited to support.
So, would you try FORM Beauty? Have you tried it? What’s your thoughts? Let’s discuss in the comments.
Oh yeah, I got a video coming soon on how I achieved my up-do! You know I go you!
As a creative freelancer, the talk of money is very sensitive. Creative folks are always discussing our need for money, but very few work toward establishing a set scale that will keep the bills paid. Consider your favorite creative person, and please understand, we don’t do this for free! From filmmakers, to writers & bloggers, to style gurus, creative freelancers, like myself, are the MOST underpaid employees in the workforce. (source). Guys, we need to ask for what we are worth and don’t be afraid to stand our ground.
I’ll be the first to say that I don’t ask for what I’m worth. That’s a BIG problem for me. You can reflect on last week’s MOTIVATION post – not asking for enough money is ANOTHER reason why I’m not as successful. Our society makes it difficult to ask for what your worth because we are so used to getting paid less. Even when I had my corporate job, I was always afraid to ask for a raise, when I KNEW I deserved it. However, if I don’t think I’m worth it, how can I make YOU a believer. Stop letting people book two-hour ‘pick my brain’ sessions for the price of a $5 coffee! You are worth more!
As a blogger and personal stylist, the info I provide isn’t necessary for daily living. You can go about your life NOT knowing the name of Beyonce’s latest bag of choice (It’s a custom Louis Vuitton), what to wear for your 20th Class Reunion (click here) or understand why using proper lighting for your selfies is a big deal. But when you do need that info, from a trusted source, you come to me or one of my stylish peers. You expect that I’ll know exactly what to say. I’m your Google. You need the 10 YEARS of info stored in my brain in order to guide you on your stylish way.
Please, stop thinking a creative’s job is easy or we do this JUST because it’s a hobby. Those who are transitioning from hobby to lifestyle need MONEY to do so. Your stylist friend who helps you dress your family for your Christmas photoshoot deserves to be paid. The photographer that has to carry his gear around town in order to get the best photo deserves to be paid. The friend who is ‘helping’ you plan your wedding, deserves to be paid. The intern who is teaching how to use ‘the Instagram’ deserves to be paid. Even your homegirl, who does hair out of her kitchen, but can slang an amazing weave, deserves to be paid. And, if you don’t feel like that individual deserves to be paid, then you don’t deserve the luxury of their skills.
Since I’m about solutions, and you are about to be a better person, I’ll give you FOUR ways to compensate your favorite creative – in addition to giving them money.
- Don’t Ask for the HOOK-UP! – Ask them their established rate before booking. Stop looking for a hook-up all the time. If the person chooses to give you the hook-up, that’s their choice. And even then, give them a tip (15%-20%).
- FOLLOW them on Social Media – Most creatives don’t have big budgets for marketing campaigns. Most of the time, we use social media to share our work, new ideas, and sales. We need your follows, likes, and shares! It take 2.7 seconds to click that share/like button and you’ve done a lot more for people you don’t even know.
- Spread the Word – Now that you’ve worked with your favorite creative, read her blog & it inspired you, or received the amazing photos from your shoot, it’s time to spread the word. Word of Mouth is the BEST way to support your creative friends. Don’t let those photos in your phone go to waste – show your co-workers & church members. Be the PR that we can’t yet afford.
- Donate to the Cause – Feel weary about giving someone cash? Then ask your independent freelance friend what they need to move their business forward. Ask them if they need a finance session with an accountant. Could she need a new lens for her camera? Or something simple, like ink and paper for her printer. Oh, think outside the box . . . FREE babysitting so she can finish that song or edit that video. Think about it.
For my fellow creative freelancers – let’s start knowing our worth and charging extra. For the supporters – thanks in advance for adjusting to our new rates. In the end, we just want to share our passions with you and give you amazing services, from a creative standpoint. Support us and your local creative community!
Thanks for reading!
I’m not successful and I know why! And you’re not successful either, so let’s talk about it. I’ve been a blogger for NINE years, NINE! You’d think, within two years, I should be riding high on that sweet delicious blog money! I should have all the high-dollar collabs, photos popping, getting sent out to amazing destinations, and not giving the sad face to my skeptical bank account. But, in my new quest to get ONE MILLION FOLLOWERS I realized my behaviors have definitely stopped me from being farther in the game than I should be. And, because I want to help you do better in your endeavors, I thought I’d bring you along for the ride. Here’s the FIVE reasons why I’m not successful:
