J. Crew Responds to Sasha + Malia Coat Designs

* 2012 UPDATE* Fab Glance is on hiatus, but I’m live posting on my FB Page Melissa Styles YOUCheck it out for all the scoop on what EVERYONE is wearing!

It seems as though J. Crew may be the official outfitters for the ladies of the first family. The lilObamas wore J. Crew for the whole Inauguration Weekend. Starting with the concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Sasha and Malia wore coats inspired by J. Crew’s Herbie Collection (shown below).
Of course, we know they wore J. Crew to the Inauguration. The coats were specifically designed for the girls. However, J. Crew has stated that they will design a whole line around the inspiration of Sasha ad Malia’s Inauguration coats and dresses.

Mrs. Obama, caused a stir in the fashion industry when she wore her couture lemon-grass colored, embroidered day suit by Isabel Toledo, with green J. Crew Gloves, and J. Crew Pumps. The Obama ladies have become a one family stimulus plan for the retail industry.

They show that you can mix high-end design with retail sensibility (something I stress at FAB GLANCE NASHVILLE). J. Crew’s sales were suffering during the last quarter, especially in the children’s department, but not anymore. The company’s website crashed when moms and dads found that Sasha and Malia’s coats were made by the suburban favorite.

The J. Crew store in Nashville (Green Hills Mall) does not offer a children’s section, however, the store does offer a fine selection of women and men’s apparel. They also have a wonderful clearance section.

“We wanted to offer a collection that would not define them, but one that would let their own personalities shine though,” continues Jenna Lyons, is the Creative Director for J. Crew.

“For their special day, J.Crew proposed a few day and evening ideas, comprised of clothing and accessories that could be easily mixed and matched with their style and color sensibility in mind. The collection was presented in color stories, which include corals, aquas, lavenders and bright reds, allowing Michelle and the girls the option of creating unique outfits of their choice to reflect each of their own personal styles. Michelle & the girls’ outfits were specially designed for them, however highlights may be seen in the Fall 2009 J.Crew & crewcuts Collections. . . . “
