EVENT: John Merritt Classic Weekend – Sept 1-4, 2011

Tennessee State University (TSU) presents the John Merritt Classic Weekend, September 1-4, 2011.

This weekend celebrates TSU’s most successful football coach, John Merritt. John Merritt coached TSU’s football team from 1963-1983. His coaching talents helped send 23 players to the NFL, six of which played in the Superbowl. Others went on to be coaches, athletic directors and coaching assistants. Merritt was so successful that he received a call from president Jimmy Carter when he won his 200th game. He was a great man on campus as well as in the community. Merritt helped bring attention to the state and the school during his successful coaching seasons. (source)

You can see why the school chooses to celebrate a legacy such as this.
